Contribution of X Chromosomal and Autosomal Genes to Species Differences in Male Courtship Songs of the Drosophila Virilis Group Species

چکیده
In sympatric Drosophila species, songs produced by male wing vibration during courtship are an effective mechanism preventing interspecific matings and maintaining sexual isolation between different species. These songs can vary greatly even between closely related species. The aim of this study was to localise X chromosomal and autosomal genes affecting species differences in male courtship song and to study their interaction in the D. virilis group species. Various genes were probed by in situ hybridisation on the X chromosomes of six species of the group, which enabled us to use localised RFLP markers in QTL studies, as well as to compare gene arrangements of different

Role of X chromosomal song genes in the evolution of species-specific courtship songs in Drosophila virilis group species.
In the Drosophila virilis group the males of the virilis phylad species produce courtship song consisting of pulse trains with no pauses between successive sound pulses, whereas the males of the montana phylad species produce songs with clear pauses between the sound pulses. We obtained song data for F1 hybrids between D. virilis (representing the virilis phylad) or D. flavomontana (representin...
متن کاملLocalization of genes affecting species differences in male courtship song between Drosophila virilis and D. littoralis.
The males of six species of the Drosophila virilis group (including D. virilis) keep their wings extended while producing a train of sound pulses, where the pulses follow each other without any pause. The males of the remaining five species of the group produce only one sound pulse during each wing extension/vibration, which results in species-specific songs with long pauses (in D. littoralis a...

The pattern and the genetic basis of variation in courtship song of D. virilis were studied using three different approaches: a candidate gene, a biometrical and a quantitative trait locus (QTL) method. Nucleotide variation in a candidate song gene, no-on-transientA, was analysed both within the species (D. virilis and D. littoralis) and between the species of the D. virilis group. Nucleotide v...

We analyzed the inheritance of two male courtship song characters, number of pulses in a pulse train, and length of a pulse train in Drosophila virilis. Biometric analyses of song differences among 16 crosses over three generations (parental and reciprocal F1, F2, and backcrosses) were performed using two different approaches. The joint scaling test revealed significant additive and dominance c...
متن کاملVariation in male courtship song traits in Drosophila virilis: the effects of selection and drift on song divergence at the intraspecific level.
Genetic and phenotypic divergence of Drosophila virilis laboratory strains originating from different parts of the species range were studied with the aid of microsatellite markers and by analysing male courtship songs. The strains from America, Europe, continental Asia and Japan showed moderate geographic clustering both at the genetic level and in several traits of the male song. The genetic ...
